I have no idea what I’m doing

I finally figured out the secret to success. Having run a successful coaching business for nearly a decade and having coached some of the most successful people around (eg. CEOs, award-winning physicians, millionaires, etc.), I can reveal the enigmatic formula to success.

The secret to success is…there is no secret! NOBODY KNOWS WHAT THEY’RE DOING!

Your path to creating your next level of success is yet to be created. It’s uncharted territory. You must accept that there will be a lot of not knowing what you’re doing if you hope to get to the next level.

Most people think that because I’m a thought leader in the field of professional coaching, that I have it all together all the time. The truth is that half the time I have no idea what I’m doing! And I’ve found that’s true for all the successful people that I coach as well. Sure, they are extremely hard working, intelligent, resilient, and passionate about what they do, but just like me, most of the time they are just figuring it out as they go along.

What leads to this phenomenon of successful people not having any idea what they’re doing?

They don’t know what they’re doing because they’re doing things they haven’t done before!

In the Neuroscience of Coaching course that I teach with two neuroscientists, we introduce something called the Insight-Innovation Loop. Our brains are wired to be innovative, to approach challenges in new ways and to try things that we’ve never done before. It is this willingness to do things when you have no idea what you’re doing that leads to new insights which then guides you to the next new thing to try.

Successful people consistently get into the Insight-Innovation Loop collecting data of which ideas can be ditched, and which ones they can double down. It’s not that successful people never know what they’re doing. In fact, they get very confident and competent in one area where they totally know what they’re doing, which then inspires them to keep being innovative to challenge themselves to grow.

And you cannot learn and grow if you already know what you’re doing!

It is also in our Neuroscience of Coaching course where we underscore the important fact that learning ONLY takes place when new neural pathways are formed in the brain. And new neural pathways can ONLY be created when mistakes are made and when we venture into the unknown.

So keep taking consistent actions in the direction of your dreams. Keep making mistakes along the way. Just keep going.

Do we need to slow down and reflect often? Of course! But we also need to balance that with not being afraid to charge forward when we have absolutely no idea what we are doing. This action into the unknown is what leads to some of the greatest lessons and insights when we do slow down and reflect.

I encourage you to keep finding yourself in situations where you don’t know what you’re doing, learn from it, grow from it, get better at it, and then create more situations where you can feel amazing about saying, “I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing…and it’s awesome!”
