If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.
And in order to find out what you need to do differently, it starts with your willingness to think differently.
Not only do you need to think about your situation differently, you also need to think about yourself differently.
You’re a leader whether you know it or not, whether you like it or not, because leadership starts with how effectively you lead yourself.
If you’re serious about making an “impossible” dream into a tangible reality, you must check in with how you’re leading yourself. You must also be honest with yourself in how you’re really showing up in the world.
Here are 5 steps to effectively lead yourself toward your goals.
I call them “The Straight A’s of Effective Leadership.” (I call them the “straight A’s” because I’m Asian and anything less than a 5.0 GPA is unacceptable. LOL.)
1. Awareness. You must become aware of how you’re holding yourself back and what changes you need to make in yourself in order to grow, learn, and improve. You must learn your blind spots and be open to honest feedback about how you get in your own way. Feedback is a gift.
This first step is scary because the feedback you receive may not be what you want to hear, it is what you need to hear. The news may feel enthralling, liberating, eye-opening, disappointing, frustrating, and infuriating…all at the same time!
Allow yourself to feel this way and let it soak in. Trust the process of growth and be assured that increased awareness is the most important step in shifting how you think and approach your goals.
2. Ask. After increasing awareness of how you’re holding yourself back and how you’re sabotaging your own success, ask yourself if it’s something that you actually want to change.
Do you really want to become the best version of yourself?
Many of the bullsh*t limiting beliefs and assumptions we make about ourselves and others are ingrained in us. They’ve become habit and our default way of thinking and behaving.
The good news is that any bad habit can be unraveled and turned into a much more useful habit of thinking and being.
It’s not going to be easy.
But you have to really ask yourself if you’re willing to put the time, energy, and effort into creating the life that you truly desire and becoming who you really want to be.
So, do you want to be better?
If the answer is “no”, that’s okay! No judgment here!
But if the answer is YES, keep reading.
3. Action. When you decide that you’re ready to do something about your blind spots, what action can you take to implement the change that you need to make in yourself?
Make your action specific, measurable and achievable within the next 1-2 weeks.
If you’re going to turn a limiting belief into an empowering belief, how will you put yourself out there to embody the new belief?
Your action must be an intentional application of whatever awareness you gained in step 1.
4. Accountability. How are you going to be held accountable for your actions? Who are you going to tell?
Accountability is one of the most important parts of this process. You will veer off track once in a while. Who is going to help you get back on track? Who else is committed to your success?
Some ideas include:
- Find a like-minded person to be accountability partners.
- Post what you’re going to do on social media and ask friends to ask you about it on a certain date.
- Join a Mastermind group where a group of like-minded people are dedicated to each other’s success and agree to hold each accountable. Mastermind group formats range from a group of friends getting together to discuss goals to groups run by professional coaches with structure and curriculum. Costs range from free to tens of thousands of dollars depending on who is in the cohort and who is leading the group. There are many different groups out there, so doing your research is important.
- Invest in a professional coach whose profession is to help you increase awareness, action, and accountability toward your goals. Like Mastermind groups, the quality, training, presence and modalities used by coaches run the gamut. Do your research!
5. Acknowledgment. After you have followed through on your intentional action step, take a step back to reflect. What worked about it? What didn’t work?
Who would you like to acknowledge that helped you accomplish it? What would you like to acknowledge in yourself?
Go through the “Straight A’s” again by continuing to hone your awareness and creating action steps to apply that knowledge.

Imagine what is possible for you if you consistently follow the Straight A’s of Effective Leadership.
Creating the life that you want is a process.
When you take intentional actions consistently to reflect who you want to become, then your goal that once seemed “impossible” will become within reach a lot faster than you think!
