You may be wondering, “Why Vertical Shift?” Well, in the adult development field of psychology, it is believed that most adults’ “complexity of mind” stops developing by their late 20s. That means that how they make meaning in the world, which is, how they see themselves, how they see the world, and how they see themselves fitting into the world has been created and doesn’t change much.
Ambitious and motivated adults continue to add competencies to develop their mind, e.g. advanced degrees, trainings, certifications, etc. But since they are approaching it with the same complexity of mind, it is considered a horizontal shift. However, when adults consciously choose to grow their complexity of mind by challenging themselves to see the world, themselves, and how they fit into the world differently, then that is considered a vertical shift. That is when exponential growth occurs. It’s also when the magic happens! In short, child development is automatic, adult development is a choice.
Strong and effective leaders have both competency (horizontal shifts) and complexity of mind (vertical shifts).
