Coaching has been a cornerstone of my life’s work. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing extraordinary transformations—clients achieving life- and career-changing self-awareness, overcoming long-standing barriers, and stepping into their potential in ways they never thought possible.
I’ve had the honor of working with a diverse range of clients, from C-suite leaders and their teams to successful entrepreneurs and business owners. Each of these individuals brings their own set of challenges and aspirations, and I’ve seen firsthand how effective coaching can unlock growth, inspire confidence, and drive lasting change.
But as much as I champion the power of coaching, I also recognize the challenges the industry faces today.
The Wild West of Coaching
When I first entered the coaching world, I was struck by its openness—how anyone with a passion for helping others could find a path here. But that openness comes at a cost.
Unlike therapy or certain areas of consulting, coaching remains largely unregulated. As a result, the profession has become a “Wild West,” where deeply skilled coaches share space with untrained individuals who label themselves as experts overnight.
For clients, this can be confusing and, at times, damaging. I’ve worked with individuals who came to me after being disillusioned by unqualified coaches—those who offered generic advice, pushed their own agendas, or made promises they couldn’t keep.
This is exactly why many potential clients are understandably skeptical about coaching. They’ve been let down by unproven methods and inflated claims, which makes it harder for them to trust in the process and believe that real, transformative results are possible.
The Rise of Surface-Level Coaching
As someone who takes coaching seriously, it pains me to see how the profession is often reduced to surface-level buzzwords. Social media plays a big role here. It’s filled with influencers offering “quick fixes” and “manifestation hacks” that sound appealing but lack depth or evidence.
True coaching, the kind that creates lasting change, isn’t about spouting inspiration or selling formulas. It’s about partnership—digging deep, asking hard questions, and co-creating a path forward that feels authentic to the client. That’s the kind of coaching I strive to deliver every day.
How Trained Coaches Make a Difference
The backlash against coaching isn’t about dismissing the profession—it’s a call for higher standards. When clients work with trained, ethical coaches, the difference is palpable. Here’s what I’ve found to be true in my practice:
- Training Matters: Completing an International Coaching Federation (ICF)-accredited program wasn’t just a box to check for me. It was a transformative experience that sharpened my skills and grounded me in a strong ethical framework.
Beyond the certification itself, the process of mentor coaching was a game-changer for me. Getting real-time feedback on my coaching from experienced mentors allowed me to identify blind spots, refine my techniques, and elevate my ability to serve clients effectively.
- Certifications and Commitment: Some people argue that certifications and credentials don’t matter, and that’s okay—they’re entitled to their perspective.
But for me, pursuing these milestones signifies a commitment to continuing education and an investment in always sharpening my coaching skills. It keeps me curious, humble, and aligned with best practices, which translates directly into the quality of coaching my clients receive.
Additionally, it allows me to continue receiving valuable feedback on my coaching from other experienced coaches. This ongoing development ensures that I am always growing as a coach, which ultimately benefits my clients as they experience a more refined and impactful coaching relationship.
- Active Listening is Key: My approach isn’t about me telling clients what to do. It’s about listening deeply and creating a space where they can discover their own insights and solutions.
As a coach, I act as a mirror, reflecting back what my clients say and feel, which helps them see themselves more clearly and understand their own desires, challenges, and potential.
This reflection allows them to gain clarity, tap into their own wisdom, and ultimately make empowered decisions that align with their true values and goals.
- Accompaniment is a Game-Changer: One of my favorite moments as a coach is when a client tells me, ‘I wouldn’t have done this without your support.’ It reminds me that coaching isn’t about fixing someone—it’s about empowering them.
I’ve recently shifted from using ‘accountability’ to ‘accompaniment.’ The latter carries a deeper sense of mutual support, where the focus isn’t on checking off tasks but on walking beside the client as a dedicated partner. This shift allows for more meaningful and sustainable progress.
And when clients know they have a partner dedicated to their growth—someone truly invested in their success—it’s amazing how much they can accomplish. This partnership creates an environment where they feel safe, supported, brave, and empowered to reach heights they once believed were beyond their grasp.
A Personal Story
One of my most rewarding experiences was coaching a client who, despite being successful in his career as a financial services industry executive, felt utterly stuck. He was bored and even contemplated quitting or switching industries.
But through our work together, he not only reconnected with his passion but also took bold steps to align his work with his core values. What made the difference? It wasn’t a one-size-fits-all solution or motivational clichés. It was a tailored, thoughtful process that addressed his unique needs, situation, and aspirations.
As we worked together, he realized that it wasn’t the industry he didn’t like—it was how he was doing it. His revitalized perspective and approach led to more fulfillment in his role, and ultimately, a promotion to a higher position with a significant increase in salary.
Our coaching helped him reignite his sense of purpose, shifting his approach and reigniting his passion for the work, which not only made him feel more aligned but also accelerated his career growth.
Tips for Finding the Right Coach
If you’re considering coaching, here’s my guidance:
- Ask About Credentials: Make sure they’ve completed a reputable coaching program.
Why it’s important to me: As a coach who’s invested time and energy into gaining proper certifications and training, I believe that a strong foundation in coaching principles is crucial for offering effective support. The right credentials show that the coach is serious about their craft and committed to ethical, professional practices.
Some may argue that results are all that matter. But at what cost? While outcomes are important, how a coach serves their client throughout the process is equally critical. Coaching isn’t just about getting from point A to point B—it’s about the journey and the integrity of the partnership. A great coach doesn’t just push for results but ensures that the process is ethical, personalized, and empowering, leaving the client better equipped to navigate future challenges.
- Talk to Past Clients: A good coach will have a track record they’re proud to share.
Why it’s important to me: Testimonials and feedback from past clients are a reflection of a coach’s impact and ability to deliver results. As someone who values ongoing feedback from clients and mentors alike, I understand that a solid track record speaks volumes about a coach’s ability to drive positive change.
- Trust Your Instincts: Chemistry matters. The right coach will feel like a partner, not a salesperson.
Why it’s important to me: Coaching is a deeply personal process, and trust is a key element in building that relationship. I always tell my clients to trust their gut when choosing a coach, because the connection you feel with them can either accelerate or hinder your growth.
Coaching Done Right
Coaching is one of the most powerful tools for personal and professional transformation. But like any tool, its true potential is unlocked only when used with expertise, intention, and care.
If you’re in the market for a coach, take the time to choose wisely, and don’t let the backlash discourage you. Look for a coach who combines experience, skill, and a genuine passion for your growth.
When coaching is done right, it goes beyond a service—it becomes a partnership that sparks lasting change, propels you forward, and unveils possibilities you never thought attainable.
